Tomato rice is one of the most popular recipe in south india and it is a flavorful recipe which consists of little bit tangyness and spicyness while having this recipe along with ritha or any gravy dishes hmmm…. soo…yummy… when i am talking about the taste of this tomato rice my mouth becomes full of water.It is very easy and quick process also, i prefer this recipe when i am lazy . It takes very less time to cook because here ingredients for chopping also very less and also here iam using pressure cooker so time taken for preparation is very less.Instead of pressure cooker you may use pot or bowl,If you don’t have small cooker you use bowl instead of 3 lit cooker later adding rice ,water and all spice powders put that bowl in big cooker or you don’t have cooker cook it on the flame directly till the rice cooked well by stirring at regular intervals. It is very healthy and hygienic because here i am using very less amount of oil

Children also like this recipe a lot and it is good fit for lunch boxes also. When there is no time to prepare for lunch boxes at early morning try this recipe.Here i added soaked rice along with tomatoes by cooking like this it gives different taste so all of you try this recipe and tell me your opinion as a comment.


  • Tomatoes-1 cup
  • Basmati Rice-1 cup
  • Water-2 cups
  • green chilies-1 or 2
  • onions-1/2 cup
  • Cashews-5 or 6
  • Oil-5 tbsp
  • Coriander Powder-1 tsp
  • Cumin Powder-1 tsp
  • Turmeric powder-1 pinch
  • Coriander leaves
  • ginger garlic paste-1 1/2 tsp
  • Cinnamon stick-1/2 inch
  • lavnaga(cloves)-3 to 4
  • bay leaf-1
  • garam masala powder-1 1/2 tsp
  • red chilli powder-1 tsp
  • salt to taste

Preparation Method:-

  1. Wash and rinse basmati rice or normal rice soak it for half an hour by adding require amount of water. keep it aside.
  2. Now heat oil in a 3 lit pressure cooker (or a bowl as you wish) add cinnamon stick, bay leaf, cloves, ginger garlic paste, cashews mix it till raw smell gone away.
  3. Later add green chilies ,onions stir it continuously till the onions turn into transparent now add tomatoes mix it until tomatoes become smooth.
  4. Add soaked basmati rice mix it later add require quantity of water mix it once.
  5. Now add require amount of salt, red chilli powder, coriander powder,cumin powder, garam masala powder, turmeric powder stir it once.
  6. Close cooker lid cook it till 3 whistles then switch off the flame open lid mix it once.Serve hot hot tomato rice by garnishing with coriander leaves along with ritha or any gravy dishes.
